Problem #1. Eroding Beach & Bluffs
- Erosion of sandstone bluffs and beaches occurs at an average rate of 6 inches per year with occasional slides of 20 feet or more. Tragically, 3 people were killed in a 2019 bluff slide in Encinitas.
- The erosion is accelerating due to water runoff and the weight/vibration of the trains themselves.
- Cliff erosion shifted the tracks in San Clemente in 2022 suspending rail service to Oceanside and San Diego for almost a year.
- Short term implications of erosion: Controversial "armoring" of the most eroded sections of beach and bluff in order to protect the rail lines. This occurred both in Del Mar and San Clemente in 2022/2023.
- Long term implications of erosion: Remove the tracks from the bluffs and beaches.
