Problem #1. Eroding Beach & Bluffs

 

  1. Erosion of sandstone bluffs and beaches occurs at an average rate of 6 inches per year with occasional slides of 20 feet or more. Tragically, 3 people were killed in a 2019 bluff slide in Encinitas. 
  2. The erosion is accelerating due to water runoff and the weight/vibration of the trains themselves. 
  3. Cliff erosion shifted the tracks in San Clemente in 2022 suspending rail service to Oceanside and San Diego for almost a year. 
  4. Short term implications of erosion:  Controversial "armoring" of the most eroded sections of beach and bluff in order to protect the rail lines. This occurred both in Del Mar and San Clemente in 2022/2023. 
  5. Long term implications of erosion: Remove the tracks from the bluffs and beaches.

After a heavy rain storm on on New Years Day 1941, a northbound freight train derailed in Del Mar at 9th street killing 3 people on board: the conductor, 

NEXT PROBLEM: #2 HIGH COST of Del Mar tunnel

The cost to reroute 2 miles of coastal bluff tracks through a tunnel under Del Mar is $4B+. This is a staggering sum that will require new taxes and greatly reduce the capacity to fund other high priority transportation projects in the county.
