PROBLEM #3. EVEN BIGGER SAN CLEMENTE TUNNEL: $16 BILLION

  1. The San Clemente Tunnel is the real potential showstopper . A 10 mile reroute/tunnel would be 4 times as long as the proposed Del Mar tunnel and cost 4 times as much at a staggering $16 Billion+. Annual maintenance cost alone would probably run $150-$200 million for a tiny fraction of travelers and commuters. At a cost of $4 million per daily rider, this would be by far the MOST EXPENSIVE project in U.S. history. Nothing else comes even close.

The problem in san clemente is urgent

The Risk of betting on some rocks to stop mother nature

  1. How long will the rip rap boulders stabilize the tracks given powerful storms and waves? It is very risky to spend $4 Billion on a Del Mar tunnel without simultaneously addressing the bigger and equally pressing San Clemente problem.

  • The Del Mar Tunnel would rank as one of the most expensive commuter projects in history. On a per rider basis the tunnel would be 20x more expensive than the recently completed Mid-Coast Trolley Extension. Combined with the $16 billion estimated cost of the San Clemente, the 2 tunnels would be the most expensive ($20 Billion) by far in both California and U.S. history at an astounding cost of $5 million per daily rider.

NEXT PROBLEM: #4 Very low ridership

The Coaster train has few riders and growth had been declining for years even before the pandemic.
