Problem #7. Not Equitable

  1. The small number of Coaster passengers are also predominantly high income earners. Spending billions on the Coaster is deeply unjust and will reduce available funding for more equitable and compelling transit projects that better serve the needs and goals of the community. 

SPENDING BILLIONS FOR THE SMALLEST RAIL LINE

  1. Despite spending millions on reinvestment of the Coaster over the past 25 years, ridership remains tiny. Spending billions "to save the Coaster line at cost" is misguided, wasteful and definitely not equitable.

  1. Not surprisingly, 50% of Coaster passengers drive alone to the train stations. The irony is rich.

Almost all Coaster passengers own at least 1 car.

Breeze/Bus service satisfaction is higher the Coaster and also carries more than 4x the number of passengers. Investing further in bus service is both smart and equitable.
