Problem #9. Doesn't Reduce GHG

  1. The train's low passenger volume, ongoing impact on the beaches & sensitive coastal habitat along with the prospective impact from the construction of 2 massive tunnels is the opposite of environmentally friendly. Claims that the train and its massive tunnels will be good for the environment is a textbook example of GREENWASHING.

  1. The Coaster trains are on often near empty with an estimated vacancy average of approximately 90%.
  2. Mostly empty trains are not environmentally friendly and do not reduce GHGs.
  3. The trains are not electric and run on diesel.
  4. 50% of passengers drive alone to the train stations.
  5. The GHG emissions and environmental impact during prospective construction of the tunnel will be very large and never yield a net GHG benefit.

EVs in California

California EV Mandate 2035

California has mandated that all new car sales will be zero emission by 2035. This law will help dramatically reduce pollution and GHG emissions from cars and greatly reduce the environmental arguments favoring trains.

High Growth EVs in CA

EV growth is rapidly expanding with a market share in California that has already hit 25% of new car sales.

EV Trucking

EV Trucking

EV trucks and semis are also making rapid advancements as battery range and power improve. Sometimes the claim is made that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) favors trains over trucks, but this is not true. Trucking makes up the vast majority of freight transportation and zero emission trucking is a key initiative

NEXT PROBLEM: #10 Not a military necessity

The military does not rely on the train for transporting equipment. This is done most heavily on the roads and seaways. LEARN MORE
